Swami Vishnudevananda came to America at the request of his Master Swami Sivananda to bring the wisdom of yoga to the West. With the inspiration and knowledge he had acquired from his Master and his personal vision of yoga as the path to inner peace and thus world peace, he designed this intensive course, the Teachers' Training Course. Started in 1969, it was the first training course of its kind in the West.
A yoga professor should be able to stimulate students and assist them in all aspects of the practice. Thus, the course must provide an integral approach to yoga. To date, more than 28,500 professors have been certified, allowing them to deepen their own personal yoga practice and providing them with international certification for sharing what they have learned.
By recreating life at an ashram (the place where a Master lives together with his or her students), during the month-long course students learn to apply their lessons in a practical way while living the style of yogic life that Swami Sivananda taught: "Simple life, High thinking."
With the slogan Unity in Diversity, the course will bring together people from many countries, with different beliefs and customs. Over the course of the month, they will experience the unity that exists beyond their differences and thus understand the true meaning of yoga.
The course will be given at the Hotel Real Dinastía, located in the town of La Pintada, 75 km. from the city of Medellín in the southwest province of Antioquia. It is set in the beautiful valley of the Cauca River, amidst green mountainous lands with a stunning view of the cliffs of La Pintada. The average annual temperature is 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The comfortable facilities will allow students to enjoy a pleasant atmosphere during the course.
The course program is based on the five basic principles of yoga: proper exercise, proper breathing, proper relaxation, proper diet, and positive thinking & meditation. The following themes will be addressed:
- Practical knowledge of asanas: postures, effects, benefits and method for teaching the practice to others. - Personal practice to attain more flexibility and master the techniques. - Breathing techniques (pranayama) to energize the body and quiet the mind. - Theory and practice of meditation - Vedanta philosophy - Chanting and mantra repetition - Study of the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient spiritual text from India - Purification exercises (kriyas) for different parts of the human body - Lacto-vegetarian diet and basic knowledge about nutrition and a healthy diet - Practice of selfless service (karma yoga), sharing tasks related to community life
